TAWOMA is the non-profit association aimed to promote the gender equity and women’s economic empowerment in the Tanzanian mining industry. It brings together common voices of rural women miners and ensures their business status is economically and commercially viable. The association was established in 1997 and currently consists of 350 members that include women and youth groups based in the northern, central southern and lake zones of Tanzania. The members are engaged in the small scale mining of gemstones, gold, diamonds, and industrial minerals. The association provides a range of services to its members such as advocacy research and lobbying; training and education about environmental conservation and disease prevention; access to information; access to technical, financial and marketing services and knowledge exchange through networking events.
